No call yet

Hmm, over an hour and no call, and it appears that I’m dealing with Transglobal Service. Their site looks like crap in Firefox, they should fire their web designers. Funny, the recorded message on their IVR said that I could look up the status of my request there, but I don’t see that anywhere. *sigh* [...]

My “Life After Nortel” interview

Maria hoofed it all the way into the living room yesterday to interview me for her blog, Life After Nortel. Here’s the interview. Yes, she’s biased, she has to live with me.

Newsflash: You can’t always trust unknown code that runs just by visiting a website

I saw this article on CNET that proclaimed that JavaScript opens doors to browser-based attacks. Umm…duh. I haven’t been the biggest fan of ECMAScript (called Javascript ’cause it sounded cooler at the time) since it was first introduced. It seemed like I was giving up control of my browser to some hacker working on a [...]

Humour in DNS

At work, Rich Lafferty pointed me to a humourous picture of traceroute output to the Bittorrent site, The Pirate Bay You have to love the technically savvy sense of humour.

Ruby: Umm, where’s the manual?

I’ve been spending the last week on and off looking at a major contender to my favorite language of Python, Ruby. As I currently do a lot of work in Perl, Ruby is very comfortable. It’s been said that Ruby is a better Perl6 than Perl6, and I tend to believe it. However, I’m finding [...]

The problem of time management

As my life gets more and more complicated, I find myself often looking at techniques for time management. I’m currently keeping track of appointments via David Skoll’s remind tool, and it’s so useful that it’s replaced Mozilla Sunbird, Lotus Notes, Palm, etc., as a means of organizing my upcoming special days and times. The interface [...]

Winter anyone?

It feels very cold out today. We have a high of -6C, which isn’t that cold, but the wind is very cold. It went down close to -20C last night, and all of the trees have this beautiful, crystalline ice frozen on them. They don’t look quite real. I’ll try to remember to update this [...]

Military History of Canada

I noticed today that Wikipedia is featuring a page on the Military History of Canada. It starts in the 17th century, and goes all of the way up to modern day. It’s an interesting read, especially for those that assumed that Canadian Military was an oxymoron.

It’s aliiiive!

Well, hardware continues to hate me. The server where this site resided suffered a harddrive failure, and suddenly I was without hosting for three domains, not to mention internet access since it was my gateway/firewall. I’ve had enough failures now that it’s time to really rethink things. First of all, I have a perfectly good [...]

Some good environmental news for a change

Hey, this is new. Some good news about the environment for a change. Apparently the Earth’s ozone layer is beginning to heal. Nowhere near healed yet, but it looks like we’ve done something right in reducing our ozone-damaging ways. Unfortunately global warming is slowing said healing, it would seem.
